Understanding The Gamble

One of the realities of any gambling proposition is that no matter how well you play the game, if chance is involved there will be times when you will experience terrible runs of bad luck. There is no way to predict when these runs will begin, how long they will last or when they will stop.

It is important to understand that just because you have an advantage over the house, it does not mean you will win every time. Having a bad losing streak is not necessarily a reflection on your playing abilities. Even the best players take beatings on occasion. With a small advantage in blackjack, the skillful player will be vulnerable to dizzying streaks of luck, both good and bad.

However, if a skill factor is involved in the gambling proposition, as it is in blackjack, that factor will eventually make the skillful player a winner. In the short run, luck goes back and forth, but as more and more hands get played out, skills begins to take its due and that is why it is so important to follow our winning strategies to the letter. Luck evens out in the long run, and when that is said and done, it is the skill of a player that will determine winning and losing.

For example, let's say you flip a coin and heads comes up five times in a row. Are those reflective of the true odds of flipping a head? Of course not. But flip a coin 1000 times, or even better, 10,000 times, and you can bet that the odds will be very close to 50-50, with either heads or tails, holding a slight edge. It all evens out in the long run.

The bettor that sticks by his gun when things go poorly will find tremendous rewards when things go his way, for in the end, a player with the skills of winning will be way ahead of the game, a big winner!

One more thing that should be discussed here is: Gambling is fun for some players, but for others it is not fun, it is problem. If you have a gambling problem, and you are unable to stay away from the tables, get some professional help. Don't gamble with money you cannot afford to lose or that emotionally, really hurts you to lose. If this is the cause, you don't belong at the tables for any amount of money, even pennies.
